You Promised Yourself You'd Parent Differently. So Why Do Your Parents' Patterns Keep Showing Up?

You've read the parenting books. You've worked hard to understand your own childhood. You know that yelling, controlling, threatening, or withdrawing isn't the kind of parenting you want to practice.

And still, there are moments when everything you know seems to disappear.

Your child rolls their eyes, ignores your request, or speaks to you with contempt—and suddenly you're furious. You hear yourself using the same tone your parent used with you.

Or you go the other direction. You're so determined not to be controlling that you struggle to hold a boundary. You give in to avoid a fight, then quietly resent it.

You lie awake replaying the argument. You feel ashamed of how you reacted. You worry that you're damaging the very relationship you've worked so hard to protect.

And underneath it all is a frightening question:

Am I becoming my parent?

If you grew up with emotionally immature parents, these reactions make sense.

Your nervous system learned how to survive in a home where emotions weren't always safe, mistakes could be dangerous, and connection might depend on keeping someone else happy.

Those survival patterns don't automatically disappear when you become a parent yourself.

And when your child challenges you, those old patterns can take over—even when you intellectually know exactly how you want to respond.

Most parenting programs teach you what to say and do.

But knowing how to parent and being able to parent that way when you're triggered are two very different things.

That's the difference between:

Knowing why you react the way you do,and being able to respond differently in the moment
Bracing before every visit or phone call with your parent, and staying steady in your own space
Surviving each day on high alert, and waking up without immediately feeling overwhelmed

The good news? Your nervous system can learn a new way to respond. You don't have to become a perfect parent. You can become a more present, confident, and connected one.

When you learn to work with the body that learned to survive your childhood, you can begin to show up as the parent you've always wanted to be: calmer during conflict, more confident with boundaries, and more deeply connected to your child.

That's exactly what this program is designed to help you do.

INTRODUCING

The Cycle-Breaking Parent

Heal the Patterns You Inherited. Become the Parent Your Parent Never Was.

The complete somatic parenting program for adults who were poorly parented.

This program brings together Inga's lifetime of personal healing, more than 25 years of clinical experience, and decades of working with individuals and families.

It combines practical parenting guidance with a somatic approach that helps you understand and change the automatic reactions your childhood left behind.

Most parenting programs focus on your child's behavior. This one starts with you.

You may already know the importance of listening, connection, healthy boundaries, and emotional regulation.

But when your own nervous system is activated, those skills can become surprisingly difficult to use.

Your childhood may have taught you that anger means danger, disagreement means rejection, or mistakes mean shame.

Those lessons can still be operating beneath your parenting decisions today.

This program helps you work with those reactions at their roots—so you're not simply learning better parenting techniques. You're learning to embody them.

Inside this program, you'll learn a step-by-step process for calming your nervous system and changing the patterns your childhood left behind, without having to retell your story over and over.

Through guided video and audio lessons lessons, and experiential somatic exercises, you'll learn how to:

  • Understand and regulate your nervous system so you can respond instead of react.

  • Build secure attachment and connection, even when your child is pulling away.

  • Set healthy boundaries without controlling, threatening, or giving in.

  • Listen in ways that help your child feel heard, respected, and understood.

  • Release the perfectionism, shame, and guilt that undermine your confidence.

  • Untether from the parenting patterns you inherited, so you can make choices based on the parent you want to be.

What You'll Be Able to Do After This Program

By learning to work with your body instead of against it, you will:

Stay Calm When Your Child Pushes Your Buttons

Recognize when your nervous system is activated and use practical regulation skills to stay present instead of automatically yelling, shutting down, or losing control.

Set Boundaries Without Losing Connection

Hold your ground with warmth and confidence, even when your child is angry, disappointed, or testing limits.

Parent With Confidence Instead of Guilt

Stop measuring yourself against impossible standards. Learn to trust your judgment, tolerate imperfection, and respond to difficult moments without becoming overwhelmed by shame.

What Clients Say About Working With Inga

It is incredibly validating hearing the similar experience of others in similar positions. This group has been no exception. I have felt very “seen” in this group, and I am incredibly grateful. Thank you for understanding…your support was felt very deep…you have inspired me to keep at it.

— Jonathan F.
Through this approach, I developed an understanding of how being raised by a mother with BPD has affected me as a child and how the problems have followed me into parenting my own children. I cannot say enough about how valuable and beneficial the information was. I feel that I understand and can identify how I react and behave in a healthier, more adaptive manner which is vital to healing. You possessed a great balance of trying to challenge me to step out of my comfort zone but yet are very compassionate, inspiring and validating. I feel that I grew a lot as a result of the group.
— Linda W.
I love to blame myself for everything but it is very obvious to me that I was immensely impacted by my parent’s personalities, my childhood, my relationship with my parents and teens, everything. It’s not our fault that we have developed some of the negative traits that come with being a child of a parent with emotional immaturity. And how comforting it was to finally heal. It turned out to be one of the most healing acts of self care I had ever experienced! It was nourishing, eye opening.
— Rachel Q.
Results focused techniques that address all layers of being; wonderful emotional, energetic and neurological repatterning methods. Inga creates an experience that allows clients to feel truly heard and seen as well as provides practical strategies for deep growth and healing.

Who Is Inga Larson?

If you've ever heard your parent's voice coming out of your mouth, I understand why that can be so frightening.

I was raised by an emotionally immature mother and a personality-disordered father. My father was a psychiatrist: brilliant, intellectual, and emotionally out of reach.

Our home was full of ideas and short on safety. By 20, I was anxious, ashamed, and always trying to figure out what I'd done wrong.

My healing didn't come from thinking my way out. It came through groups, emotionally healthy mentors, and slowly learning to feel safe in my own body.

That experience became my life's work.

I facilitated support groups for Parents Anonymous, earned my master's in social work, and spent more than 25 years as a licensed clinical social worker in private practice, specializing in complex PTSD.

I've worked with more than a thousand individuals, couples, and families, helping them understand and change the patterns that keep them stuck.

One thing became increasingly clear: You can know exactly what healthy parenting looks like and still find yourself unable to practice it when your own childhood survival patterns are activated.

That's why my approach combines practical parenting skills with somatic regulation.

Because the goal isn't to become a parent who never gets upset or makes mistakes.

It's to become the emotionally mature, connected adult your child can depend on—even when parenting gets hard.

And in doing so, to give your child something you may never have received yourself

It's not just 25 years of clinical work. It's a lifetime of it.

What You'll Learn Inside The Cycle-Breaking Parent

You may already understand how your childhood affected you. But understanding isn't always enough when you're facing an angry, defiant, or withdrawn child.

The Cycle-Breaking Parent helps you take the next step: recognizing how those early experiences still shape your automatic reactions, and learning how to respond with the confidence, connection, and emotional maturity you've always wanted to bring to parenting.

  1. Understand Why Parenting Triggers Your Childhood Survival Patterns

Learn what happens in your nervous system when your child ignores you, challenges your authority, rejects your affection, or becomes angry.

You'll explore stress physiology, neuroplasticity, and the automatic survival responses that can make ordinary parenting conflicts feel disproportionately threatening.

You'll begin to recognize when you're responding to the child in front of you—and when your body is reacting to something much older.

  2. Learn to Regulate Yourself Before You Respond

Build a practical collection of somatic skills for the moments when your body takes over.

You'll learn grounding, resourcing, orienting, movement, breathwork, and other body-based practices to help you work with anxiety, anger, shame, overwhelm, and fight-or-flight activation.

Rather than trying to think your way into calm, you'll practice helping your body become regulated enough to access the parenting wisdom you already possess.

You'll also learn how your own regulation supports co-regulation, helping your child navigate their difficult emotions without requiring you to absorb or control them.

  3. Build Secure Attachment and Restore Connection

Discover how your own attachment history influences the way you respond to your child's need for closeness, independence, reassurance, and autonomy.

You'll learn why your child's withdrawal or rejection can feel so personal—and how to stop allowing those feelings to dictate your response.

Explore the essential skills of listening, attunement, validation, and rupture and repair.

You'll practice moving from managing your child's behavior toward creating a relationship where connection makes cooperation more possible.

  4. Set Boundaries With Confidence, Not Control

Learn why saying no, tolerating anger, and holding limits can be so difficult when you grew up with emotionally immature parents.

You may swing between being too controlling and being too permissive. You may overexplain, negotiate endlessly, give in, or become rigid when you feel disrespected.

You'll learn to recognize the nervous-system responses underneath these patterns and practice a different approach.

One that allows you to be the steady, confident adult—without becoming a drill sergeant, a helicopter parent, or a pushover.

You'll explore how to guide your child toward responsibility and independence while preserving mutual respect and connection.

  5. Release Perfectionism and Learn to Trust Yourself

If you grew up believing mistakes were dangerous, parenting can feel like one long test you might fail.

Every disagreement becomes evidence that you're doing something wrong. Every parenting decision becomes something to second-guess.

You'll explore how perfectionism and fear of judgment developed as survival strategies—and how they continue to undermine your confidence.

Instead of striving to become a flawless parent, you'll practice tolerating mistakes, making repairs, and trusting your growing capacity to respond thoughtfully.

You'll learn that emotional maturity doesn't mean always getting it right. It means being able to acknowledge what happened and make things right when necessary.

  6. Stop Letting Shame and Guilt Run Your Parenting

Learn to distinguish genuine responsibility from the shame and guilt you may have carried since childhood.

You'll explore why your child's disappointment can feel unbearable, why conflict can trigger intense self-criticism, and why you may feel responsible for everyone else's emotions.

You'll work with these experiences not only as thoughts, but as sensations and reactions in your body.

You'll practice staying connected to yourself when guilt tells you to give in, shame tells you you've failed, or fear tells you to regain control.

The goal isn't to stop caring about your child's feelings.

It's to care deeply without abandoning your own judgment or emotional balance.

  7. Untether From Your Parents' Patterns and Create a Different Legacy

You don't need your parents to acknowledge their mistakes, apologize, or change before you can begin parenting differently.

You'll explore grief, acceptance, forgiveness, boundaries, and emotional separation—without treating forgiveness or reconciliation as requirements.

You'll begin to distinguish the parent you had, the parent you needed, and the parent you're choosing to become.

And you'll turn your attention toward the relationship you're creating with your child now.

A relationship built on emotional safety, healthy boundaries, mutual respect, and the freedom for your child to become their own person.

Plus: lifetime access.

This is an evergreen program. Take each step in order, and take as long as you need. Once it's yours, it's yours for good.

This Isn't Just Another Parenting Course.

It's a different way of showing up when parenting gets hard.

Throughout The Cycle-Breaking Parent, you won't simply learn about attachment, boundaries, listening, or emotional regulation.

You'll repeatedly practice a somatic process that helps you move from automatic childhood reactions toward intentional, connected parenting.

  1. Notice what triggered you
  2. recognize what happens in your body
  3. uncover the old meaning or prediction
  4. regulate enough to stay present
  5. Reconnect with your parenting wisdom

  6. choose how you want to respond.

Because the goal isn't to become a parent who never gets triggered.

It's to become a parent who can recognize when the past has entered the room—and increasingly choose how to respond to the child who's actually there.

Frequently Asked Questions

I've already read the parenting books and tried the techniques. How is this different?

Most parenting programs focus on what to say, what to do, and how to manage difficult behavior.

The Cycle-Breaking Parent addresses something those approaches often overlook: what happens inside you when your child triggers an old survival response.

You'll learn practical parenting skills, but you'll also work directly with the nervous-system reactions that make those skills difficult to use in the moments that matter most.

My child is already a teenager. Is it too late to change our relationship?

No. While you can't undo the past or control how your teenager responds, you can change the way you participate in the relationship.

Learning to regulate yourself, listen differently, repair ruptures, and hold boundaries with confidence can create opportunities for greater trust and connection.

Your child doesn't have to be young for you to begin parenting differently.

My child isn't a teen yet. Is it too early to start the program?

Absolutely not! In fact, starting before the teen years gives you a wonderful head start.

Adolescence brings new challenges as children seek greater independence, question authority, and begin separating from their parents. These normal developmental changes can activate old childhood wounds in ways you might not expect.

By learning to regulate your nervous system, establish healthy boundaries, and build strong attachment now, you'll be better prepared to navigate those challenges without falling into the parenting patterns you grew up with.

Rather than waiting until conflict and disconnection become established patterns, you can build the foundation for a trusting, connected relationship before the teen years even begin.

Why wait until you're struggling to learn how to do things differently?

Do I need experience with somatic work?

Not at all.

You'll learn the foundations of nervous-system regulation in plain English, along with practical body-based exercises you can begin using right away.

You don't need special equipment, previous training, or the ability to meditate.

What if my child refuses to cooperate or doesn't want to talk to me?

This program doesn't require your child to participate.

You'll begin by changing what happens within you and how you respond to your child's behavior.

You can't force connection or guarantee that your child will respond differently, but you can create a more emotionally safe and consistent environment in which connection becomes more possible.

What if the exercises bring up big feelings?

You'll go at your own pace. The regulation skills are there for exactly those moments, so you can settle back into calmer waters. If you want live support, the VIP Experience adds weekly group coaching with Inga.
